Santa Muerte Legend:
The Santa Muerte (Saint Death) is the Holy Lady of Death. Her story is one intertwined with the rise of Catholicism in Mexico and the reinvigoration of the ancient Aztec God Miclantecuhtl and Goddess Mictecacihuatl, the “Lady of the Dead” who ruled over Mitclan - the last layer of the Underworld. Within the context of the Mexican Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead), death is not something to be feared, rather a celebration of life and the acknowledgement that all things, including our own existence, are cyclical. Similarly to the Death card in the tarot, the Santa Muerte is a symbol of transformations and new beginnings.
