Scarabs (dung beetles) lay their eggs in dung which they roll into balls.  In ancient Egyptian mythology, the beetle was associated with the divine manifestation of the early morning sun, and it was thought that the beetles "rolled" the sun across the sky.  The scarab hieroglyph is Kheper and this glyph refers to existence, development, growth, manifestation and effectiveness, and the scarab beetle continues to be used as a powerful amulet today.  Scarabs are a powerful representation of death, resurrection and emerging from the darkness and moving into the light.  

These beautiful ceramic scarabs are handmade and painted in Egypt with each on being unique. These scarabs have been left as a natural white pottery, with the carapace glazed a dark blue.  As these are hand painted, there is variation with each one and any imperfections in paintwork are to be considered as unique to each scarab, not an imperfection.
