A witches athame is typically a double edged, blunt blade used as a tool to channel energy.  Depending on coven preference, the handle is typically black and the blade is blunt to prevent any accidents during ritual.  It is not used for physical cutting, but rather to symbolically "cut" energy.             The athame represents the masculine in ritual and ceremony.
